GAMIFICATION IN SCIENCE EDUCATION EFFECTS ON STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Gamification has become an increasingly used instructional approach in science education because it can increase student engagement and support learning outcomes. This paper reviews recent studies on gamification in science education and synthesizes its effects on student engagement and academic performance. The literature indicates that gamification generally improves participation, motivation, persistence, and classroom interaction, while also producing positive effects on achievement in many contexts. However, the magnitude of impact depends on design quality, learning context, and alignment with instructional goals. The paper argues that gamification is most effective when game elements such as points, badges, feedback, challenges, and leaderboards are implemented purposefully rather than added superficially. Based on the reviewed studies, gamification can support science learning by making abstract concepts more accessible and by encouraging active participation. The paper concludes that gamification is a promising strategy in science education, but its effectiveness requires careful pedagogical planning and sustained evaluation
